The British Royal Navy Articles of War are the first stop on the Warlord's Reading List. They were the (relatively) concise and easily understood laws to be followed in all cases by the members the navy while in service. Useful for establishing codes of conduct for all men, clarifying the chain of command, ensuring operational readiness and effectiveness, and spelling out the penalties for transgressing these rules (mostly death):
- Cowardice: DEATH!
- Treason and treachery: DEATH!
- Negligence: DEATH!
- Buggery: DEATH!
An up-and-coming warlord in the next age of hyper feudalism (or a guerilla force) would do well to adopt similar rules in order establish discipline and cohesion, maintain moral and trust, ensure operational effectiveness of the men, deter betrayal and desertion, and likely build legitimacy and external support.
